Pet Fire Safety

Keeping Your Pets Safe in Case of Fire

Preventing Fires Caused by Pets

  • Use flameless candles – Pets can knock over lit candles, starting a fire.
  • Protect stove knobs – Pets have been known to turn on stoves accidentally. Remove or cover knobs when not in use.
  • Avoid glass water bowls on wooden decks – Sunlight passing through glass can ignite wood. Use stainless steel or ceramic bowls instead.
  • Secure loose wires – Pets may chew on electrical cords, which can cause sparks and fires.

Including Pets in Your Fire Escape Plan

  • Practice evacuating with your pets – Familiarize them with the sound of smoke alarms and practice leading them to safety.
  • Keep leashes and carriers near exits – This makes it easier to secure your pets quickly in an emergency.
  • Designate a meeting spot – Ensure everyone in household knows where to gather with the pets once outside.
  • Assign a pet rescue person – Designate someone to help gather pets during an evacuation if it’s safe to do so.

In Case of a Fire

  • Get out First – Never delay your own escape to search for a pet.
  • Alert Firefighters – Let them know there are pets inside.
  • Close Doors Behind You – This helps prevent the fire from spreading and gives pets more time to be rescued.

Pet Alert Window Sticker

Place a pet alert sticker near the front door or a visible window. Include the number and type of pets in the house so firefighters know who to look for. These can be ordered online or from local pet stores.
